I discovered the work of Edward S. Curtis while i was visiting the Medicine Man exhibition at the Wellcome Collection in London. Curtis documented the American West as well as the rites and lives of Native American peoples.
Hop! Another picture because those Navaho sure knew how to make fantastic masks.

From the Balinese to Native American's the use of ritualistic (and I would add beautiful) masks to symbolize the passage of life forces through and into the human experience have been central to culture - but where are they now? It strikes me as worrisome that we live in a culture where everyone perpetuates a mask of themselves but we never put physical masks on despite our clear need for them. There's much to be learned from these collections.
