I've never had any interest in football (that's soccer for you, American friendz.) Never ever. I come from a country that never won any championship (and if they ever did, i still don't care), i find men in shorts a rather pathetic affair and i just don't get sport on tv anyway. There's been only one exception to the rule until last week and it was Eric Cantona.

Check out his famous kung fu kick and seagull morale, especially the seagull:

But to be honest with you, i had never heard of him until he started doing commercials on tv.

And hop! Another one. Isn't he wonderful?

They don't do men like this anymore, do they?

Last week my interest in football woke up. I went to the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven (NL) to see Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait. Most of you have probably seen the film. It's out in DVD and was touring film theatres and art museums a couple of years ago. I only saw it last week and i doubt i'll get to see anything better in a long time. It might sound cheesy but just watching the trailer brings tears in my eyes:

Artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno had 17 cameras follow Zinédine Zidane on 23 April 2005, during a match between Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Villarreal in Madrid. Gordon and Parreno made a montage of all these recordings, forming a 90-minute long video portrait of Zidane. In the installation, they show this compilation alongside the full length broadcast of the game.

If you're anywhere in the area of Eindhoven, you know where to spend one hour and a half of your precious time.

City of Sound (him again!) reviewed the movie with more depth, understanding and intelligence that i ever will so i'll leave you in his capable hands.

Hi, Regine,

I'm Guilherme, from Brazil. How are you? I don't know if you have ever known that Brazil is called as "soccer country". We won five cups, while countries that also did it just won 3. I don't care about this sport, like you, but I know one thing. Zidane is nothing, as soccer player, when he's compared with Pelé and Ronaldo. I don't know if you know him. They are Brazilian soccer players, although Pelé has already stopped. As well the former soccer player Maradona (Argentiniam), they're known as the best soccer players all over the world.

Here, it's a link that shows how Pelé is an artist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySdwCQBP4nY&feature=PlayList&p=FFD7755DEAFFF313&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=23. Sorry to don't comment about Zidane's movie, but you really have to know better soccer players :);

Guilherme.

Hi Guilherme,
sure i know about Pelé and Ronaldo but i have absolutely zero interest for football and footballers or any sportsman for that matter. i'm happy to keep it that way. i can't be interested in everything.
Cantona is the exception because he is surreal, he has the 'bad boy' appeal and he's also an actor now. Zidane is another story, there was that head-butt scandal of course but the movie is so beautiful i was speechless.

Why thank you for the link, Regine. Glad you enjoyed 'Zidane' - it's wonderful, and you've reminded me to watch it again. We will make you interested in football yet.

Zizou is the player I loved most, when he left Turin (Juventus F.c.) I cried for two days, I mean it.

Laughing out loud!
Cantona and Zidane: bad boyz de Marseille.

"It might sound cheesy but just watching the trailer brings tears in my eyes", being from Turin, and as a supporter of Juventus (and a supporter of France as a national team) I understand the feeling.

It happens the same to me when watching for the billionth time the two goals Zizou scored in the 1998 World Cup Paris final:

FINALE COUPE DU MONDE 1998

Yes they do make men like this. you just dont know cause you are a art fag hag. LOL

Don't let this Brazilian fool you. Zidane is seen as one of the best players ever, in the top 5 maybe. Ronaldo is an amazing striker but as an overall player I wouldn't put him in my top 5 ever. (top 10 yes) And you can fight endlessly about the real quality of Pele, since the game was much different when he played it.
(Oh and I am German, not French, so I don't just say this out of national pride)

And the Zidane movie is indeed incredibly beautiful.
