Book Review: Ant Farm - Living Archive 7
|
Ever since i saw that magnificent retrospective about Ant Farm at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporaneo in Sevilla, i've been looking for the Ant Farm 'bible', THE book among the many books dedicated to the experimental architecture and performance group. This one is as close as it can get to being the best monograph i've found so far about the avant-garde architects, activists and performers (granted that i wouldn't call myself an expert in Ant Farm matters.) Ant Farm - Living Archive 7 demonstrates the relevance of Ant Farm's work by situating it within the context of contemporary events and culture. It is incredibly well documented and illustrated with pictures, sketches, and other historical images. I found the illustrations so amazing that i'm going to shut my mouth, leave you with this little video i made to show you what's inside the book and spend some time with that wii fit i finally managed to snatch in a little shop over there in sleepy Namur! |

I love this book. It has to be one of the most complete monographs I've ever seen. And it does a great job of describing the context within which their work appeared. If you dig Ant Farm, you might be interested to know that Ant Farm members Chip Lord and Curtis Shreier, along with San Francisco Architect Bruce Tomb, are building a new media van during their residency at The Headlands Center for the Arts. It will essentially be an update for the digital age that will also serve as a media hookah and time capsule. If you're curious about the project, I've been working with them and have been including near-weekly updates on Life Without Buildings.
hi Jimmy! thanks so much for telling us about the new project. looks great
I remember seeing a short film on Ant Farm a couple of years ago. It is very interesting since I had no idea what kind of statement it was making at the time. I'll look into this book since I don't know a whole lot about the specific group nor that time but have always wanted to know more.
