0truntablle.jpgCompact/box, by Bernhard Moosbauer and Oliver B. Rubli, is an installation of turntable sculptures playing records that brings electronic music samples back into the analog world, says be:side who sent me the link to the work. Each of the specially produced 12inch vinyl records have up to 100 endless grooves and each groove contains an endless 1.8 sec. music loop at 133BPM.

The room is filled with up to five "compact/box" modules, each represents one "instrument" within the "orchestra." Visitors are asked to change the playing loops on each of the modules. That leads to a constantly changing sound and rhythm.

More orchestras: with Vacuum cleaners and other household devices; zippers; Gameboys or laptops.

And turntables: the turntable microwave; postvinyl; Computer/Turntable hybrid; Bootleg Objects; video turntable, Yokomono, etc.

The sound of the turntable orchestra is quite alluring. This piece at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh as part of a show "Gestures"
shortly after 9/11 was remarkable. More pictures here and working backward to see the piece in the context of the show.

I could get a hands on this installation at the dialog festival in winterthur, switzerland. And I must admit I didn't find it very alluring. As a visitor you could change pitch, speed, direction of each record playing electronic beats. But I got more a feeling the installation was used to sell the recordplayers to djs. This feeling was increased by many catalogs lying around which advertised the players used.

I'm sorry if our installation was not well explained at the dialog festival - the idea is just to change the loops and not to test drive the nice turntables. Yes we found after a lot of talks with different companies finaly a sponsor and yes we have no problem to do art with corporate sponsors - because without there would be no installation like this and we-make-art-not-money!
