LAPD to throw GPS at fleeing cars
|
The LAPD will outfit cars with a device that propels and sticks a GPS onto a fleeing car. The department will mount the StarChase LLC device in the grill of some squad cars. "Officers in the car would control a green lazar light, similar to an aiming device that fixes on your target," said LAPD Lieutenant Paul Vernon on Friday. "A small dart-like device is propelled from the officer's car."
The officer also will have a remote unit, about the size of a device that unlocks a car, when they're outside the patrol car. Each StarChase unit can fire two GPS tracking devices in case the first one misses or does not stick to the vehicle. The GPS device consists of a battery and a radio transmitter embedded in an epoxy compound. The GPS tag activates at impact. It transmits the car's exact position via a wireless modem. An encrypted cellular backbone delivers continuous position updates to the StarChase server that pushes location-based information to authorized users through a password-protected Web portal. cool. but what does the picture of minis going down stairs have to do with anything?
it's a screenshot from one of the most famous scenes of car chase. the movie was "the italian job" (the original version with michael caine, not the new one)
Minis photos are nice, but will the GPS work in the subway tunnels, huh?
I like this idea, reminds me of exactly 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS! But alas. I can't believe I was too bored to write this..
Actually the picture is of new minis in the 2nd version of the film (I hesitate to say remake!).
In the original version with Michael Caine the minis went in the order red, white then blue.
This being the phrase sometimes loosely used to describe the union jack and adding to the Nationalistic feel good theme!
They wouldn't have got half as far though if the Italian police had used GPS tracking darts!
The new trend will be for criminals to slather the back of their vehicles with some kind of grease. And what happens when the fleeing criminal learns how to stick the device to someone else's vehicle.
