Six String Sonics, The, by Gil Kuno, can be seen as a huge guitar played by six musicians, each responsible for one string. This "guitar" produces unique sound that is hard to produce by using regular guitars.

Instead of stringing one guitar with 6 strings, we have created 6 single string guitars which will be played by 6 people.

Since there will be 6 hands manning the strings, the group is capable of reaching many more chords and melodies. Here are just a few examples of compositions by Six String Sonics, The ...

It's probably best to listen to the music produced by using this instrument (demo1, demo2, demo3). There's also a video clip. It's played by cool Japanese indie artists.

Nowadays, any instruments can be "played" on computers, which gives me the feeling that all musical instruments in the world are converging into a small box. Six String Sonics, The, in contrast, decomposes and expands a personal instrument into a social/collaborative space.

This work also won an award at Japan Media Art Festival.

oh christ make it stop. thats just god awful :(

I think the main problem with this instrument is that they have 6 asian guitarists. Which may be racist, no, i'll not defend that, but tell me how many rock and roll hits you've heard come from the Asian continent? Anyone? I didn't think so.

giddle

This isn't rock and roll, stephen. This isn't a rock and roll instrument. This is something yet to be defined, and not the same old crap. By the way, some of the finest musicians in the world are Asian.

h

Mm-hm. Will be interesting to hear what other people do with the instrument (if it ever gets let out). Don't like these guys' compositions much.

Stephen

lol i kinda knew this would happen. Yes i'm assuming that they are trying to make rock and roll, but thats because they compare themselves to the "standard" setup, in the video they kept showing "rock and roll" bands, i just assumed. And yes i know some of the finest musicians in the world are Asain, they know how to be dedicated. Anyway i support what they are trying to do (change) While what they had in the video is probably extremely advanced, and technically very advanced, its very un-entertaining.

Uh, there are some major league Japanese rockers. Guitar Wolf rocks harder than any American band I can think of.

I had Gil in a class once and when he showed us the video last Winter of Six String Sonics, The we all thought it was one of the sweetest things that we had seen and heard.

Hi all.
I understand that the idea of decomposing a guitar is rather cool, and this is a fine art-installation. But I do also think that it is worth noticing if you give a standard guitar to each one of the 6 players, "the group would be capable of reaching many more chords and melodies".

Anyhow, we all know (or suspect :)) that the instrument defines the artistic performance, so -being capable of reaching many more chords" might not be the rule to use for measuring...

I would suggest that stephen check out the J-Rock sceen as there are manny excelent japanese rock bands. Dir en Grey, The Back Horn, Malice Mizer, and Gackt all have amazing music. the list goes on and on. Your comment dosent sound Racist, just uninformed.

Chris

Stephen:

Michio Kurihara. Please Google that, find some examples of his work (Ghost, White Heaven, with Damon and Naomi). Ok, he may not have "hits," but who cares? And Kurihara's the tip of the iceburg. There's a world of fantastic Japanese guitar psyche out there, just open your mind.

I think it's batshit crazy in a good way, and no I can't name many asian rock groups that were successful in the west, but in their favour, Yoko broke up the Beatles and I'm eternally in her debt.

The Real Stephen.

Huh. Sounds like Nintendo(NES) tunes to me. Oh....exactly like any Megaman cart you choose to plug in. A sound that is limited by (gasp) 8 seperate, single tone voices. (6 strings, a bass and a percussion)

Neat notion though. A lot of validity to the idea of the formulized band structure.

GLW

I like it!

berman

I love this music.

I guess they do have good musicians in Japan (especially electronic music); like
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Tujiko Noriko, Piana, Jazztronik,Polysics, etc etc... if You dont have any idea of them, just google it.
