Shigeru Ban’s temporary museum has taken up Pier 54 (Manhattan's west side) to house the Ashes and Snow photo exhibition, on view from March 5 to June 6, 2005.

The Nomadic Museum is a 45,000-sq.-ft. space made of recyclable and reusable materials: 148 steel cargo containers for the walls, pressed paper tea bags for a hand-made curtain, paper tubing for the roof and columns.

Designed to be easily disassembled and reconstructed, the entire building will then travel to Los Angeles, Beijing and Paris.

Via archinect. More in Downtown Express and NYMetro.
More containers: the minimal truck, guerilla homes, living in a box.
