GM experiment stamp project
|
Lucy Hibburd, of Falmouth College of Arts (UK), made a project aimed at raising awareness about genetic modification. Each of her four postage stamps shows a beautiful, yet disturbing image. A leaf represents the environment, a flower stands for crops, a butterfly for wildlife, and a tomato for food. But each of these images has been modified to mirror the square shape of the stamp.
The reverse of the stamp carries a message thanking users for taking part in the experiment although users are unaware of what this means until they lick the stamp and coloured dye is transferred to the tongue – highlighting how one is drawn into GM experimentation without being aware of doing so. |

I like the idea. Is there a reason why you chose stamps as your medium?
Yes, this was a brief set by the RSA which i answered as one of my minor projects at university. The brief asked that i produce a set of four postage stamps campaigning a topic of my choice. I chose Genetic Modification because there was a lot of debate on TV and in the papers at the time and the whole issue fascinated me. Glad you like it. :)
