The East German crosswalk symbol, known as Ampelmann, is very culturally significant. When Germany joined the EU, they were going to change the crosswalk symbol, but there was a large groundswell of support for the dorky-looking creature and the former East Germans were allowed to keep him. Now I guess they've made a female version as well.
