The Voting Booth as political statement by artists

The Parsons School of Design in New Yorkhas invited 47 artists and architects --ranging from Christo to David Byrne, Maya Lin, Frank Gehry, Diane Von Furstenberg and Ed Schlossberg-- to update 50 actual Florida voting booths from the 2000 Presidential election, commenting on design, democracy, and related themes.

- Robert A.M. Stern’s 'Hindsight 20/20,' festooned with sideview and rearview mirrors, a play on the surveillance society and the popularity of political hindsight,
- Hodgetts + Fung’s 'CHHHAHD,' converted their booth into a slot machine whose spinning reels are embossed in value-neutral icons — Security, Environment, Military, Arts, Economy — along with three slogans from 1984, “War is Peace,” “Freedom is Slavery,” “Ignorance is Strength.”
- Tucker Viemeister’s 'Sit on this': the artist printed on the seat, “DO NOT REST UNTIL YOUR VOTE IS COUNTED”)

The exhibit at the Parsons School of Design Gallery, Manhattan, opens Friday and runs through Nov. 15. Many of the entries will be auctioned off at a fund-raiser Oct. 27.
