Before being replaced by LED displays, nixie tubes --glowing bottles of ionized gas-- were used as indicating devices in many instruments.

Jeff Thomas likes them so much that he used them to build the Nixie Clock which incorporates GPS Satellite receivers for timekeeping precision.
