One of the biggest problems in Spain over the past few years has been the increase in the number of cases of domestic violence. This year more than 30 women have died as a result of mistreatments.

The Fundación Telefónica and the City of Motril (Granada, Spain) are collaborating to set up a system based on mobile phones and GPS to help women mistreated by their partner.

The mobile phones, developped by the Telefónica Foundation and equipped with GPS technology, can send SOS messages to local police whenever the woman feels in danger. A control centre will be installed at the headquarters of the Motril police and the handsets will be distributed to five (only five!) women who will be taught how to use them.

The programme has previously been pionneered in other Spanish cities, including La Rioja, Pamplona, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca, Avilés or Santander.

Yay, spain gets e911. Now if we could only get abused women to use it here in the United States. Why is it that only five women are getting these in Spain, and why is it that they need to be taught to use it? All I need to do in an emergency is hit 9-1-1-TALK, and they'll be able to locate me physically in case I've fallen and can't get up.

We also have 112 in Spain/Europe (like 911 in the States) where you can report any emergency.

The reason to have a GPS service is that when you're been atacked you won't probably have the time to explain it.

That's not my point, all modern US cellphones have e911, which is a locationing service which doesn't have to use gps chipsets. The fact that this is news shows that while America is one step behind Japan technologically, Spain is another step behind and ignoring everyone else at the same time. When I call 911, they will find me even if i don't say a single word.
